“Importance of Music Education in Schools.”

Presenter 1: Florence

Music is not just entertainment—it is a powerful tool that shapes our mind, emotions, and personality. Even though it is often treated as an extra subject, music education plays a very important role in a student’s overall development.

1. Brain Development

First, music education helps in brain development.

When students learn music, they use multiple parts of their brain at the same time. Reading notes, understanding rhythm, and playing instruments improve memory, concentration, and thinking skills. Because of this, students who study music often perform better in subjects like mathematics and languages.

   2. Discipline and Patience

Second, music teaches discipline and patience.

Learning music requires regular practice and dedication. A student cannot master an instrument in one day. This process teaches them to stay consistent, manage time, and work hard to achieve their goals. These habits help them succeed in academics and life.

When students set goals, such as learning a new song or improving their technique, they learn to stay committed until they achieve it. These habits extend beyond music, helping them perform better in academics and handle challenges in life with patience, focus, and determination.

3. Emotional Well-being

Another important point is emotional well-being.

Students today face stress from studies and exams. Music helps them relax and express their feelings. It can reduce anxiety and create a positive mindset. Sometimes, when words are not enough, music becomes a way to express emotions.

In addition, engaging with music can improve mood by creating a positive mindset. It helps shift focus away from stress and brings a sense of joy and comfort. Over time, students learn to use music as a tool for self-expression and emotional balance, supporting their mental well-being and helping them cope better with everyday challenges.

  4. Social Skills and Teamwork

Music also helps develop social skills.

In activities like choir or school bands, students work together as a team. They learn to listen, coordinate, and support each other. This builds cooperation, communication skills, and respect for others.

Through this process, they develop strong communication skills—both verbal (during practice and feedback) and non-verbal (through cues, eye contact, and gestures). Most importantly, they learn respect: valuing each person’s contribution, being patient with mistakes, and celebrating success as a team. These are life skills that go far beyond music and help them in everyday relationships and future collaborations.

 5.   Cultural Awareness

Music education also promotes cultural awareness.

Different types of music represent different cultures and traditions. By learning music, students understand and appreciate diversity. For example, artists like A. R. Rahman mix Indian and international styles, showing how music connects people across cultures.

Through this exposure, students become more open-minded and culturally aware. They begin to understand that diversity is something to celebrate, not fear. Music, in this sense, becomes a bridge that connects people, helping students grow into more empathetic and globally aware individuals.

     6. Career Opportunities

Music education can also lead to career opportunities.Students who are passionate about music can become

Music Teacher: A music teacher teaches students how to sing, play instruments, read music, and perform confidently. They can work in schools, music academies, churches, or even run their own music school. A music teacher helps students discover and develop their talents.

Music Director: A music director leads and manages the musical aspects of performances, recordings, choirs, bands, orchestras, films, or stage productions. They guide singers and musicians to ensure that the music sounds organized, expressive, and professional.

Musician: Musicians perform music by singing or playing instruments. They can perform at concerts, events, churches, weddings, festivals, or record music in studios. Some musicians become solo artists while others perform in bands or orchestras.

Composer: A composer is a person who creates original music. They write melodies, harmonies, and rhythms for songs, films, choirs, orchestras, advertisements, games, and performances. Composers use creativity and musical knowledge to express emotions and tell stories through music.

Our very own well-known Naga artists, such as Abdon Mech, began learning music at a young age. He took part in school competitions and local events, where his talent was recognized early on. This early exposure to music helped him develop confidence, creativity, and strong musical skills. Over time, his dedication and passion led him to achieve remarkable milestones, including opening a show for John Mayer and receiving the title of GQ India’s Most Influential Youth Award 2026.

Overall Development

Finally, music supports overall development.

Education is not only about books and exams. Music helps in emotional, social, and creative growth, making students more confident and well-rounded individuals.

Most importantly, music builds self-confidence. Performing in front of others, overcoming stage fear, and seeing their own progress gives students a strong sense of achievement. It teaches patience, discipline, and resilience qualities that go far beyond the classroom.

Conclusion

In conclusion, music is not just a subject, but an important part of our overall growth as students. It helps us relax when we are stressed, express our feelings, and build confidence. Through music, we also learn discipline, teamwork, and respect for different cultures.

As students, we feel that music makes learning more enjoyable and meaningful. It gives us a break from academic pressure and helps us become more creative and positive individuals. It also teaches us with valuable life skills that will stay with us forever.

So, music should be encouraged in every school, because it not only creates good musicians but also helps us become better and more balanced human beings.

I would like to end with a quote:

“Music is so influential on the brain that the type you listen to actually has the ability to change the way you think and look at the world.—
